Can people see through sheer curtains at night?
Updated
Yes. At night, with the lights on inside and darkness outside, people can see through sheer curtains into the room. Sheers give privacy in daylight, not after dark. For night privacy, add a blockout curtain or blind behind the sheer, or switch the lights off.
A sheer curtain is a light, open fabric. By day it hides the room from the street because the brightness outside is greater than the brightness inside. After dark that flips. With lights on inside and darkness outside, a person standing outside sees through the fabric the way you see through it by day.
Why the reverse happens
What you can see through a sheer depends on which side is brighter. In daylight the outside is brighter, so the glare from the window hides the room. At night the room is brighter, so the room shows and the outside disappears. The fabric has not changed. The light has.
What improves night privacy
- A blockout curtain or blind in front of or behind the sheer, closed at night.
- A sheer made fuller, because more layers of fabric overlap and make it harder to see through.
- A denser weave. Some sheers are tighter than others, so look at a sample against a window at night, not only in daylight.
- Lights kept low, or placed away from the window, so the room is not brightly lit against the glass.
A sheer on its own is not a night privacy product. Many homes pair a sheer with a blockout on a double track: the sheer stays closed by day and the blockout closes at night.
| Covering | Day privacy | Night privacy with lights on |
|---|---|---|
| Sheer curtain | Good | Poor |
| Light filtering roller blind | Good | Fair. Shadows can show |
| Blockout curtain or blind | Full | Full |
Fitting matters too
A sheer that only just covers the window shows more than one with generous width. Fullness, how much fabric is in the curtain compared with the width of the track, makes a difference to how much you can see through it. A fuller sheer also hangs in deeper folds.
What to ask your retailer
Tell your curtain retailer which rooms you want private at night and which way the windows face. Ask to see the sheer hung in a fold, in front of a window if you can, and ask how it looks with the lights on. They can quote a sheer on its own, or a sheer and a blockout together, and check the room for a double track. Speedy Blinds makes curtains, tracks and roller blinds for retailers.

How can I get privacy at night with sheers?
Add a blockout curtain or blind, make the sheer fuller, or keep the room lights low.
Can people see in through net curtains at night?
Yes, in the same way as sheers. Net and voile curtains are both sheer fabrics.
Are thicker sheers more private?
A denser weave shows less, but no sheer gives full night privacy.
