What is a curtain end stop and why does a track need one?
Updated
A curtain end stop is the part at each end of a curtain track that stops the runners, also called gliders, coming out of the track. Without one, a runner can slide off the end when the curtain is pulled fully open. If a runner has come off, ask your retailer or installer to check the end stop.
A curtain track lets runners, also called gliders or carriers, slide along its length so the curtain can open and close. The end stop is the part at each end of the track that stops the runners coming out.
What it does
When a curtain is opened or closed all the way, its runners are pushed toward the ends of the track. The end stop blocks that last bit of travel, so the runners stay in the track and the curtain stays hanging as it should.
How it fits with the other parts
- Runner, glider and carrier all mean the same thing: the part that slides in the track.
- Lead runner or master carrier: the runner at the leading edge of the curtain. On a cord drawn or motorised track it is the part that is pulled.
- Hook or pendant: the part fixed to the curtain heading that hangs on the runner.
- End stop: the part at each end of the track that stops the runners coming out.
What happens without one
If an end stop is missing or damaged, nothing at that end of the track stops the runners, so a runner can come off the end of the track. A runner that is cracked or missing can usually be replaced without replacing the track, as long as the replacement suits that track. The end stop is a small part, but every track needs one at each end.
What to ask your retailer
If a runner keeps coming off the end of an existing track, ask your retailer or installer to look at the track, the end stop and the runners together, and to check that an end stop is fitted and in good condition. If one is missing, ask which end stop suits your track. When you are planning a new track, ask your retailer which fittings come with it, so you know exactly what is supplied. If a curtain becomes hard to slide, they can look at the track, the joins and the runners together. They can also tell you which track and runners suit your curtains, and order replacements that fit.
Other ways people ask this
Can an end stop be added to an existing track that does not have one?
Ask your retailer or installer. Which end stop suits a track depends on the track, so they will need to see what you have.
Does every curtain track need an end stop?
Every track needs something at each end to stop the runners coming out, and that part is the end stop. Ask your retailer or installer which one is fitted to your track.
What should I do if a runner has come off the end of my track?
Ask your retailer or installer to look at the track, the end stop and the runners together, so the cause is found and fixed, not just the runner put back.
