Why do roller blind fabric edges curl?

Roller blind fabric edges curl because the coating and the base cloth of the fabric pull unevenly at a cut edge and respond differently to temperature and humidity. The edge can curl inward or outward, and on some blinds it gives an hourglass shape down the sides. It is a normal characteristic.

Roller blind fabrics are usually coated on one face. The coating and the base cloth respond differently to temperature and humidity, and at a cut edge there's nothing holding the two in balance, so the edge rolls.

What contributes

  • The fabric's coating and construction. Some ranges curl more than others.
  • Temperature and humidity changes at the window.
  • How the fabric has been stored and rolled before it was made up.

Edge curling is a normal characteristic of roller blinds rather than a manufacturing fault. It tends to be more visible on lighter, thinner fabrics and on blinds that spend a long time part rolled.

If edge appearance matters to you, ask your retailer about the specific fabric range before you order. Some fabrics behave much better than others and it's worth knowing which before it's made.

This answer is general information. For your own windows, your retailer's advice and your order with them come first.
